Remove the ChatGPT Image Watermark & Clean Its Metadata

Images you generate in ChatGPT (and via DALL·E) usually have no logo or visible mark — which is exactly why people assume they’re “clean.” They aren’t. OpenAI embeds C2PA metadata that identifies the image as AI-generated, and its current image models also add an invisible watermark in the pixels. Here’s how to check for both and what removing each one takes.

What’s hidden in a ChatGPT image

The marker is invisible to the eye but sits in the file’s metadata: C2PA Content Credentials recording that the image came from an OpenAI model. Upload such a file to a platform that reads Content Credentials and it can be flagged as AI-made automatically — no visible watermark required.

How to remove it

Does ChatGPT use an invisible pixel watermark?

Yes — on its current image models. OpenAI’s own checker at openai.com/verify reports an invisible SynthID watermark in images that come out of OpenAI’s image models — the same kind of in-pixel signal Google uses for Gemini. Note that the C2PA manifest doesn’t mention it, so a metadata viewer won’t show it.

That changes what “clean” means for a ChatGPT image:

• Metadata strip (free at preview size) removes the C2PA “Made with AI” record. The pixels — and the invisible mark in them — are left exactly as they were.
• The in-pixel watermark survives screenshots, cropping and re-saving. It only goes when the pixels themselves are rebuilt, which is what the full removal does — returning a faithful full-resolution look-alike rather than a byte-identical file.
