How to Remove the ChatGPT Watermark from Text (Docs & Word)

· 5 min read

Search for “ChatGPT watermark” and half the results are about images. The other half are about text: people worried that an essay, email or post they drafted with ChatGPT carries a hidden marker that gives it away. Here’s what is — and isn’t — actually hidden in ChatGPT text, and how to clean it in Google Docs, Word or any editor.

Does ChatGPT watermark its text?

Not in the way it marks images. OpenAI has said publicly that it built a text-watermarking method but chose not to ship it, and there’s no cryptographic signature in the words ChatGPT writes. What people do find are unusual characters that ordinary typing rarely produces:

  • Narrow no-break spaces (U+202F) and regular no-break spaces (U+00A0) in places where a normal space would go.
  • Zero-width characters — zero-width space (U+200B), joiner (U+200D), non-joiner (U+200C) and the byte-order mark (U+FEFF). They take up no room on screen.
  • Typographic punctuation— em dashes (—), curly quotes and ellipsis characters (…) where most people type -, " and ...

Whether these are a deliberate marker or a side effect of how the model was trained has never been confirmed — but they’re easy to detect with a script, so it’s sensible to remove them from text you’ve edited and made your own.

Does Ctrl+Shift+V remove the ChatGPT watermark?

No. “Paste as plain text” (Ctrl+Shift+V, or ⌘+Shift+V on a Mac) strips formatting — bold, fonts, links — but keeps every character, including the invisible ones. A zero-width space is plain text, so it survives a plain-text paste untouched.

How to clean ChatGPT text in Microsoft Word

  1. Press Ctrl+H (⌘+Shift+H on a Mac) to open Find and Replace.
  2. In Find what, type ^u8203 (zero-width space). Leave Replace with empty and click Replace All.
  3. Repeat with ^u8204, ^u8205 and ^u65279 (the other zero-width characters), replacing with nothing.
  4. Find ^u8239 (narrow no-break space) and ^s (no-break space) and replace each with a normal space.

How to clean ChatGPT text in Google Docs

  1. Open Edit → Find and replace (Ctrl+H).
  2. Tick Match using regular expressions.
  3. Find [‌‍] and replace with nothing, then find [  ] and replace with a single space.

Anywhere else — Notion, a CMS, an email client — the quickest route is a code editor such as VS Code, which can highlight invisible Unicode, or a small “remove invisible characters” script.

What cleaning won’t do

Removing characters doesn’t change how the text reads. AI-text detectors score word choice and sentence rhythm, not hidden bytes, so the real fix for text that sounds generated is rewriting it in your own voice. And if your school or employer requires you to disclose AI help, cleaning the characters doesn’t change that obligation.

Images are a different story

ChatGPT images really are marked — with C2PA metadata and an invisible in-pixel watermark. That’s covered in removing the ChatGPT image watermark.
